Why is Server Speed So Important to Revenue?

February 7, 2017 By admin

If your website always takes forever to respond to a request, then you could be killing your revenue and reducing your chances of profits.

In other words, you’re doing the exact opposite of what you hoped to achieve when you first started building your web presence in the first place. Today, the key to getting the most sales and conversions is to combine relevant and valuable content with quick loading times.

The speed that is associated with your website is the amount of time that it takes for a webpage to become visible on a screen once it’s requested by a browser. Recent research suggests that the loading speeds of websites is essential when it comes to evaluating things like traffic trends.

Remember, a slow website can quickly to begin to frustrate your customers, leaving you in a tougher position when it comes to convincing them they should buy from you.

A Slow Website is Terrible for Revenue

Often, slow websites have higher bounce rates and poorer sales. Various studies suggest that the average visitors on your website will be more likely to leave a website if it doesn’t load within three seconds. Slower websites not only reduce your opportunities for sales, but your frustrated visitors are likely to share negative reviews on your business too.

Google often records web page speeds to help determine the ranking of a website alongside other organic factors. You can check the average speed of a page by inspecting Google webmaster tools.

According to the latest information presented by Google, it’s possible to improve your conversion rate by up to 2% simply by speeding up the speed at which your website loads by a single second. Amazon, Yahoo, and Shopzilla have all improved their business in the past just by enhancing loading speeds.

So, How Fast is Fast Enough?

Most people believe that the ideal loading time for any website is under three seconds. Although obviously, the less time it takes for a page to load, the better your results will be in terms of bounce rate and customer engagement. If your page takes around five seconds to load, then it’s still considered to be fair, but the truth is that most people will click out before you have a chance to try and sell them anything, or show just how authoritative you are.

In today’s fast-paced world, we’re all trying to get things done as quickly as possible. Because of that, we feel as though we simply don’t have time to sit and wait for a website to load. If your website doesn’t load as quickly as your customer expects it to, then the chances are that they’re going to simply look elsewhere for the product, service, or information that they need. In other words, your slow pages help your competition, and make you suffer!

A Dedicated Server Could Help

If running a successful online presence is key for your business, then choosing a fast and dedicated server to host your content could help you to make the most out of your company. The speed of a website can depend on many things, including the items that you put onto your webpages, such as plugins and graphics.

However, speed also depends on the architecture of your webpages, including the speed of hosting servers and databases. Going with the right web hosting option can help you to enhance your website ranking and improve your overall speed in no time.

While shared hosting servers are often a great deal cheaper than dedicated servers, there are a low number of resources available. That means that you will often struggle when it comes to speed.

Businesses are better served by dedicated hosting solutions that allow them to avoid the hassle of sharing their resources and memory with other people. The speed of your server can help to boost the performance of your website. Since this is common knowledge, simply upgrading your hosting solution could be enough to prove to your audience that you believe enough in your current business to invest extra money into it.

    Hey Erik,

Thanks for letting me know the importance of the server speed, I’m doing SEO of the site heengineeringprojects.com and facing an error on the server side. This website is hosted on the godaddy and using the peak plan with is 150 usd per year.

Resources showing the red zone all the day, and you have to know that this is the unlimited package. This website is now on it’s pioneer level which you can check easily on any SEO tool.

Please suggest me what to do? because we have more than 150k visitors per month. I need to plan the hosting for this, godaddy is now offering us the whole server but we don’t want server right now what you suggest me because we are losing money on this point.

    Nice article Erik.

We have recently moved a client’s websites to a new server with astonishing results. With the original setup the website was taking an average 13 seconds to load. We had to convince the client that their long-time, trustworthy, hosting provider was giving them a disservice and that a server migration was worth undertaking. Sometimes this can be tough to prove. Especially if the migration needs to be done on a complex e-commerce website. Even when you do all the testing, it’s very hard to be 100% sure that moving servers is the definitive solution.

In this particular case we were able to drastically decrease the loading time by moving to a new server. The website currently loads, on average, in less than 3 seconds!

We saw a 60% increase in registrations and subscriptions as a result of this move.
We are yet to quantify the benefits on the online sales, but our and, most importantly, the client’s impression is that they improved significantly.

    Hey Erik,

One of the things that most site owners overlook is page speed. When we talk about page speed, it is simply the measurement of how fast our site’s content loads. So, when we talk about page optimisation, our page speed is also one of the things that should be working on.

It is one of the factors that can contribute to having a higher ranking and a profitable site. When our site visitors deal with our slow-loading pages, we are sure to slowly lose potential clients as well. It is really beneficial for our business to have a site that loads fast.

It will make our visitors happy and keep their interest to browse on the other pages of our site. If our website is business oriented, and brings in a fair amount of customers, we might want to change hosts or plans at this point.

Another thing that is a little more labor-intensive and stressful, but at times necessary to increase the speed of our website, is to change our theme. Eventually, thanks for sharing your worthy experience with us.

    With best regards,

    Amar kumar

    Hi Erik,

I’m not yet using a dedicated server, probably because my site doesn’t receive that much of traffic (around 4-5k monthly).

However, I understand the server speed and have done everything I could to improve my site loading time.

Thanks for this guide, it cleared some of my doubts.

    Regards,

So true. Speed is so important that I just spent about 12 hours to fix my niche websites! Some now loads in MS. yeah! Less than a minute and this sites have a lot of content+images.

I will wait for a month to see if it will affect the ranking in a positive way.

Great tips Erik! I was wondering, Does images in a site greatly affect the webpage loading? or is it simply related to the server?

    Hello, Erik!

Way too great to find out your blog is on the dedicated server!

I can certainly imagine how fruitful is to be up on the dedicated server.

And I to agree with you that it is the very important investment to be done in order to have the site to keep running.

Having a fancy-looking site with so many features but having down time to time is no worth of an investment at all. And does not act great.

So, a server selection (web hosting) should be the number one choice when starting the blog.

So, thank you for this great cover of an important task! 🙂

    Hey Erik,
    Great post!

Indeed, a page with a fast loading time is must for great user experience.

But, sometimes we can’t get the loading speed below 3 seconds, especially if the page is full of images. A clear example for such pages is the roundup post. If you have 50-100 participants, you will have the same number of photos, and a lot of comments, that also affect the loading speed if lazy loading is not a possible option. Then, we can just do our best to have the loading speed optimized as possible.

Thanks for sharing the valuable post!

    Nice weekend ahead

    Regards
    Hussain

    Hi,
You have mentioned quite correctly the role speed plays in getting new visitors as well as retaining old ones or making them come back again. If the server is slow the site automatically becomes slow.
A webmaster needs to work on both issues that is server speed and site loading time. Site speed becomes issue when you have non optimized scripts, uncompressed images or bugs in sites.
You can always check your server speed & site loading time on our free site – zigstat.com
