Growing a Successful Marketing Business: How to Get Started

July 22, 2016 By admin

Some of today’s most successful companies are marketing firms. Many are digital marketing firms in particular.

You can find many stories of professionals who have built their businesses from nothing. Some marketing companies can even be set up as the perfect business to run remotely.

Once you have people to handle your accounts, they could need little direction from you. Meanwhile, you can travel the world. If you’re interested in creating a marketing business, it won’t happen overnight.

You need to put a plan in place to develop your service, starting with knowing all about the industry.

Get Educated

Are you already a marketing expert? Then you’re on your way to be a success. However, if you don’t know anything about marketing, you need to learn.

Many people who work in marketing start with a degree, but it’s not essential to go to college. You can learn what you need to know and find work without having to spend hours in a classroom. If you want to educate yourself, you can start with many of the resources available online.

When you’re not sure where to start, it’s often best to start with an online course. For example, you can check out the information provided by Simplilearn on digital marketing. If you learn better with someone teaching you, online courses often have videos and other great resources to use.

You can also find many articles, blogs, and podcasts for free that can help you. Plus, there are hundreds of books that will teach you the skills you need. Even if you’re busy, you can always take ten minutes out of your day to read for a bit. Of course, if you prefer a more formal education, you can always go and learn in a classroom.

Find Some Experience

You might have learned some important information about marketing. But you also need to put it into practice. For most people, it makes sense to get that practice at an existing marketing firm.

You could jump straight into finding your own clients. However, it would be difficult without any experience to show. At a marketing company, they can show you the ropes and help you develop your professional skills.

You might know the theory of how to put together a successful marketing campaign. You still need to apply it in real life if you want to learn and grow. So start by looking for a job where you can use your knowledge. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a full-time marketing role.

It could be a position with a startup where you do a bit of everything, including marketing. You could start with a marketing firm but perform a non-marketing job. Look for full-time, part-time, internships and apprenticeships.

Develop a Specialism

As you gain some work experience, you might find yourself adept in a certain area. Many people find that they have a talent for something in particular. They then focus on developing their skills in that specialism.

Perhaps your digital marketing skills are better than attempts to work in print marketing. You might have a knack for creating and running successful Google AdWords campaigns. Noticing what you’re good out can help you develop an idea for a marketing business in the future.

Of course, it’s important not to focus too much on one skill. You need to be well-rounded if you want to impress clients.

Build Your Skills and Reputation

While you are working for someone else, you should take the opportunity to make an impression. When you decide to go it alone, you will have evidence of your work and experience. You will also have contacts who could be useful for you. Show your employer that you are ambitious and you could move up the career ladder.

You could find yourself with an unappreciative employer. But you will still be able to point to the excellent work you have done if you change jobs or start working independently. Use your free time to network, as well as building relationships with clients at work too.

You may not be able to work with existing clients when you leave the firm. However, they could recommend you to people they know.

Make a Business Plan

While you are building your reputation, you can start thinking about your own business. There are several things you can consider. They range from the purpose of your marketing business to your target market.

You can also start making a plan and setting out a timeframe for when you hope to launch and develop your company. You don’t have to develop a comprehensive plan, like you would present to a bank when asking for a loan.

However, the more detailed you can make it, the better your idea of how things will work can be.

Start Bringing in Independent Clients

When you make the transition from employed to self-employed, it’s best to do gradually. Some people decide to save enough money to live on for a while so that they can make a big leap. However, many others start working on the side so that they can slowly bring in the work they need.

At some point, you will have to make the switch, and you might have to do it when you’re not making a lot of money. While you’re still employed, you can start taking on work independently.

It’s best to look for long-term clients who can stick with you when you’re ready to leave employment. You should decide if you want to work with these clients using just your name. You might want to set up a business with a different name instead.

Running Your Business Full-time

Eventually, it will be time to start working for yourself full-time. If you continue to be employed and try to launch your business, you won’t have time to do everything you want. Deciding when to make the change can be difficult, however. If you wait until you have enough money to live from your own clients, you could be waiting a long time.

You might never make enough from working in your spare time. Often, you will have to make the jump with a safety net of savings to help you out. Most experts recommend having enough to keep you going for six months. If it all starts to go wrong and you’re not growing your business as you hoped, you could have time to find a job again.

Working with Others

You will probably find yourself working with other marketers. You might want to hire people to perform the same tasks as you, or to offer the skills you don’t have. You might eventually have too much work to handle, so you need to look for some help.

There are a couple of ways you can grow your team. You might decide to build a group of remote workers, perhaps hiring people on a freelance basis. You could also consider setting up an office.

You can bring in some key workers to work with you in that environment. If your aim is to create a business that runs itself, you should think about creating a staff you can train for permanent positions.

Getting Funding for Your Business

If you want your business to grow, you need to fund it. Some people self-fund the growth of their company from the profits they make. However, if you want to do things faster, you might need some help.

You can seek funding from a number of avenues, depending on which one you think will be most successful. Traditional bank loans can be difficult to get for many people. So business owners often look at other means. For example, crowdfunding has grown in popularity.

However, it’s often best to help fund something innovative. Unless your business is doing something unique, it might not be appropriate. You can also look for investors or even get friends and family to put some money in.

Growing Your Business Reputation

As a marketing business, you should have one advantage. If you can’t market your own company successfully, you don’t have much hope for the future. You should have the skills and knowledge you need to promote your business.

Although, you might need some help from fellow experts. You’ll be up against a lot of competition, so you need to find a way to stand out from other marketing firms.

Stepping Back from Your Business

For some people, the goal is only to have to work a few hours a week. If this is something you want to do, it could take a while to reach that point. You need to set up your company so that your staff can work almost entirely without you. I

f you’re the brains and talent behind the operation, you need to make sure your employees are just as talented and knowledgeable as you. They need to be able to replicate what you can do for success.

Creating a successful marketing business isn’t something you can do quickly. It could take you a long time to grow your company, but your hard work can pay off.

Erik, really enjoyed your article, since I’m working hard to be a successful digital marketer/social media consultant.

I totally agree, education is super important. You have to have a clear idea of your goal before you learn. As well as the skills you need to get there. Along with strong reasons why – so you’ll stick with it and not give up.

Was reading a book by Peter Voogd that points out losers try to learn everything at once (and end up overwhelmed) but winners focus on a subject until they’ve applied it and seen some results and progress. Then they move on to the next skill.

You gave some really practical advice too when you encouraged saving up enough to cover expenses for at least 6 months.

Thanks again for such a helpful post!

Erik, truly making the most of your article, since I’m striving to be a fruitful advanced advertiser/online networking expert.

I absolutely concur, instruction is super essential. You need to have an unmistakable thought of your objective before you learn. And the abilities you have to arrive. Alongside solid reasons why – so you’ll stay with it and not surrender.

Was perusing a book by Peter Voogd that focuses out washouts attempt to learn everything on the double (and wind up overpowered) yet victors concentrate on a subject until they’ve connected it and seen a few results and improvement. At that point they proceed onward to the following ability.
