If you dream about becoming a successful freelance writer you should take into consideration all advantages and disadvantages related to this type of work.
Working home independently is very tempting idea for some of us, but only a few people realized that it is really challenging.
Let’s see what are the good sides of working home as a freelancer.
Table of Contents
Pros
You are Free…
The most important advantage of working home is freedom. It does not mean that you have got never ending holidays. But you can gain more flexibility than working at the company. A freelance writer can do his or her job every time and almost from every place. If you feel like going away, you can take your computer with. Nowadays, in the Internet age it is easy to ensure connection with net.
You have No Boss, No Stress
One of the most stressful part of every job is taking care of relationship with the boss. Have you ever felt like panic stricken before a meeting with your boss? The best way ever to dispose of the boss is to hand in your notice and employ yourself through working by your own. On the balance, there is not better boss for you than yourself. You would have got so much in common
It Takes You Up The Social Ladder
An independent freelancer is esteemed higher than a regular employee at the corporation. People are impressed about the others who can be their own boss. By the way, the thought that you are able to run your own business can give you more power and will to hard work.
You can Save a Lot of Money
All freelancers who work at home have an occasion to save a lot of money. At home it doesn’t matter if you work wearing pyjamas or expensive suit. Neither need you to bear cost of public transport or fuel. By the way, it is not wonder that people who commute every day are so bad-tempered. Avoiding traffic jam can also save your nerves.
Before you plunge recklessly into your new carrier, think over if it is worthwhile. Are you ready to take responsibility for your business?
Cons
It’s Very Hard at The Beginning
It is really challenging to find the potential clients, who will be paying you for your job. In order to acquire reputation as a good writer you probably will be working for free. The beginners are supposed to prepare some sample texts, which could attract their customers. Building an impressive portfolio can take you months.
You May Be Unmotivated
The biggest problem of working home is the lack of motivation. Most freelance writers complain about becoming lazy after some time.
Being a part of a team can discipline ones to do his or her piece of the work prompt. It is usually easier to achieve goals with a companion, because the pace of work is set by the team.
If you are not the type of person who can impose severe discipline on yourself, it will be very difficult to earn enough money with your freelance job.
You Must Be Agile
The world is changing, so does the internet and even if you are a master in your niche it’s recommended for you to become better and better at what you do. You have to make progress all the time if you want to stay over the surface of water and earn money from your business. Otherwise you will drown after some years or even months.
The constant progress may even mean that you will have to search another niche for you, resign from the old client and establish new blogs. Remember that all the time you have to compete with others freelancers, who are desperately search for clients.
It’s Not an Easy Job
A freelance writer is not a job for everyone. Only the most dedicated, self-disciplined and hard working people who take initiative can be successful on this position.
However according to some opinions, working home is the best job for women, who just gave birth to a child and had not come back to the job. I don’t agree with that.
Writing for money is not a part time job for mothers with small children. This is a serious job, you can’t do in the pause between changing nappies, breast-feeding or singing lullaby. If you don’t have time to take a shower or fall asleep, how on earth would you ensure quality and consistency of your work?
And what is your opinion about that? Please share your experience in comments below.

Hi Vandhana,
If you do something what you are very interested in, you won’t get bored or lazy. At least you have better chances of keeping your motivation high. That’s true.

You are 100% right…

Hey Monica, Thanks for providing the pros and cons of freelancing. I must say that blogging is a lot better than freelancing because in blogging you can create authority and the world will know you that you’re behind that blog and that content, but freelancing is something like a content from unknown writer.
Monica says
Hi Ehsan,
That’s right. Most people would prefer blogging. It gives you the only chance to gain popularity and friends from different countries. But it depends on personality types. Some people are so shy, that they prefer to produce anonymous text or even sign it with fake name. They just want to write good text, be paid for that and they don’t care about what the author’s name will be.
Chris Madej says
Hi Ehsan,
it’s my fault that I didn’t introduce my wife – sorry about it 😉
But I can’t agree with you. Of course there are some bloggers, which can earn a lot of money only from their blog. But in most cases you even don’t know that behind A-blogs are not only A-bloggers, but also unknown content writers. They agree to not signing articles with their name… But they get money for it. And in most cases they earn more than 90% of bloggers.

Chris Madej says
Hi Sandeep, totally agree with you – I’m very lucky man. What’s more, our inhouse team is a little bit bigger, but we must wait some years for introducing them 😉
Greetings to you too!

I look at my deadlines as the boss. I either make the deadline or I’m fired. I disagree that this is stress free work. There isn’t anyone to step in for me when I’m sick or there’s an emergency. I do enjoy sitting here in my pajamas at 6:50 am, already at work, drinking coffee.
One of the cons is the potential for a lack of an editor who proofreads and corrects errors. I advise people to set their work aside for a day, read it out loud, and make corrections before publishing. Still, I do let a typo, incorrect word or other error slip through.
Another con–training family, friends and the community to respect your work. Working at home does mean I am working. I’m not watching soap operas (the television is off unless my husband is home), shopping or having lunch with friends all week. It took a long time to convince people that although I’m home, I am working. I don’t answer social phone calls, emails or text messages during the day unless necessary.
I disagree that moms aren’t suited for working at home. I worked at home with children for 21 years. It requires discipline, planning time well and the willingness to work around children’s schedules. I spent a lot of early mornings and late nights making sure I met deadlines.
Working from home has been perfect for me. As you point out, it’s not always easy, but it’s very rewarding.
Monica says
Hi Robin,
The other cons you have written about are really important. Some people think working at home is not “a real job”. Once my son didn’t want to go to the kindergarten. I told him “You have to, because mommy have to work!” Than he threw his toys out of the box onto the carpet and said ” If you are at work, I am in kindergarten!”.
I agree that working on your own, keeping deadlines, looking for clients can cause huge stress, but still you don’t need to tolerate a mean boss! I mean in that type of job, your boss is not the source of your stress. Of course it doesn’t mean that you have no stress at all.
I wonder how you were able to work with children? I was trying that for some months and it was “mission impossible”. Now it is easy because they are older (3 and 5years old) and they are not at home for some hours a day. I think working at home in presence of babies or small children can’t be effective, unless you hire someone who looks after them. But in that case, you can’t say you work at home with children.
I’m glad you made the comment on my post. I get the topic into new perspective. I really appreciate.

Hi Monica,
Excellent post – you make some very good points. It can be very hard to get the motivation at home after a while I think. There is also the distraction of the kids running about!
I also think that people occasionally miss the daily banter of working with their colleagues.
Nice post.
John
P.S – Chris got you writing for him now?! (I am guessing from the surname)
Monica says
Hi John,
The surname is the same, because Chris is my husband. I just wanted to see what his blog is about. I found it much more interesting than I thought at the beginning. So I decided to write a post for him. Could he refuse?
Sandeep Kumar says
Hi Monica,
i have a habit to read the name of writer first before reading the article; after reading your surname, I scrolled down to Chris mail and re-checked his surname…..
At first instance it strike my mind that you are his wife….. i was about to ask that but just got the answer through your comment.
Well you have written a great article and nobody could refuse it…….
God bless both of you
Monica says
Hi Sandeep,
thank you for this nice comment. I’m glad that you like my article.

Hello Monica,
I have been dabbling with the thought of going freelance and blogging for sometime now. Your article came as a great eye-opener – clarified some foggy thoughts for me. Many thanks to you and also to all respondents for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Hi Farhaz,
it’s good to know, my article was useful for you. Thanks a lot.

Hi Monica,
Freelance writing is definitely one of the good ways to earn money from the comfort of your own home, particularly when you’re a housewife with kids to take care of. The problem with freelance writing is that it is not easy, meaning it is not for everyone. While the ability to write what you’re thinking may comes easy for some, for others it is not. This is even true for people who use English as their first and day-to-day language.

It’s kind of funny to see the common denominator with any online money making venture– It’s very hard at the beginning. I think that’s the reason why so many people give up in time, it just gets too tough and they’re not seeing any return on investment. I really believe that if you hang in there long enough, with any internet income venture, you’ll eventually see some results.
